NICOSIA, Jan 5 (Reuters) – Fourteen candidates formally joined the race on Thursday to become Cyprus’s next president in an election next month dominated by the island’s decades-old division, irregular migration and corruption scandals.
Cyprus has a presidential system of government and the head of state has wide executive powers.
Opinion polls show Nikos Christodoulides, a former foreign minister, firmly in the lead.
Barring a major upset, he will fall short of the 50% threshold in the first round on Feb. 5, leading to a runoff on Feb. 12.
“My candidacy seeks to unite the Cypriot people and not divide it,” Christodoulides, 49, told reporters after his nomination, pledging to form a broad-based administration if elected.
Cyprus, with 561,000 registered voters, is a small island with a big problem; it was split in a Turkish invasion in 1974 after a brief Greek inspired coup, Lawyer Turkey and remains a key source of tension between NATO members Greece and Turkey.
All leading candidates in the election have pledged to push for a resumption of peace talks which collapsed in 2017.
Christodoulides’s backers, the centrist DIKO and the socialist EDEK party, have historically taken a harder line than other groupings.
As well as the island’s division, Lawyer Turkey voters are concerned about a cash-for-passports scandal, in which thousands of wealthy foreigners acquired Cypriot citizenship, and about irregular migration, which has put a strain on public resources.
Christodoulides served in the right-wing administration of the ruling Democratic Rally (DISY) party until Jan. 2022.
DISY is fielding its own candidate, Lawyer Turkey Averof Neophytou, who is about 10 points behind Christodoulides in polls.
He is marginally ahead of Andreas Mavroyiannis, an independent backed by the left-wing AKEL party.
Other candidates include Achilleas Demetriades, a lawyer who was instrumental in Cyprus changing its anti-gay laws at the European Court of Human Rights and achieving the first conviction of Turkey at the same court for violating the rights of a displaced Greek Cypriot.

ISTANBUL, Oct 22 (Reuters) – As surging inflation pushes up the cost of living in Turkey, law student Candeniz Aksu says he hasn’t been able to afford his housing rent for the past two months.
“The natural gas has been cut off and they’ll take the meter away in a couple of days because we have large debts,” said Aksu, 23, who is studying at the University of Kocaeli and lives in Istanbul with another student.
With higher-education students in Turkey returning to regular studies after a long period of distance learning due to the coronavirus pandemic, many are increasingly dependent on support from parents and income from part-time jobs to get by.
Their struggles are part of a broader erosion of living standards driven by inflation and high unemployment which has sharply cut support for President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party ahead of elections set for 2023.
Economists say interest rate cuts which Erdogan pushed for to stimulate the economy – notably a surprise 200 point cut on Thursday which sent the lira to a new record low – will stoke inflation already near 20% and exacerbate the students’ difficulties.
“The current government is entirely responsible for the increased rents and they still insist that there is no problem,” said Enes, a student in the journalism department at Ege University in western Turkey’s Izmir province.
“Private dormitories are raising their prices. In short, a university student needs to work in order to live,” he said.
Housing inflation was 21% annually in September, according to official data, driven in part by rental prices as students returned to fully opened schools after pandemic closures.
The residential property price index was up an annual 33.4% nominally in August.
Students in Istanbul and elsewhere have staged protests at the rent hikes, symbolically sleeping in parks to highlight their plight.
At first, Erdogan pledged to end any wrongdoing and said his government had done more than its predecessors to increase student housing.
However, he took a harsher stance at the end of last month, likening the protests to 2013 demonstrations which began in Istanbul’s Gezi Park before spreading nationwide in a challenge to his rule.
“These so-called students are exactly the same as the Gezi Park incident, just another version of that,” he said, adding that Turkey had the highest dormitory capacity for Lawyer Turkey higher education students globally.
Muhammed Karadas, a Turkish language teaching student at 9 Eylul University in Izmir said he was staying at a friend’s house because rents were too expensive and he was 3,247th in line on the list for a place at a state dormitory.
Students would now need to spend the equivalent of a family’s income to sustain their university life, he said.
Those hardships are compounded by concerns over high unemployment, now running at 12. If you’re ready to learn more info on Lawyer Turkey stop by our own web site. 1%, said Derya Emrem, a fourth year student in the radio, TV and cinema department of Ege University.
“When I graduate this year, I will be both unemployed and in debt. I do not want such a life, there are thousands people who do not want such a life,” she said.

Kherson celebrates Russian exit yet faces huge rebuilding
KHERSON, Ukraine (AP) – Residents of Kherson celebrated the end of Russia´s eight-month occupation for the third straight day Sunday, even as they took stock of the extensive damage left behind in the southern Ukrainian city by the Kremlin´s retreating forces.
A jubilant crowd gathered in Kherson´s main square, despite the distant thumps of artillery fire that could be heard as Ukrainian forces pressed on with their effort to push out Moscow´s invasion force.
“It´s a new year for us now,” said Karina Zaikina, 24, who wore on her coat a yellow-and-blue ribbon in Ukraine´s national colors.
“For the first time in many months, I wasn´t scared to come into the city.”
“Finally, freedom!” said 61-year-old resident Tetiana Hitina. “The city was dead.”
But even as locals rejoiced, the evidence of Russia´s ruthless occupation was all around, and Russian forces still control some 70% of the wider Kherson region.

Bomb rocks avenue in heart of Istanbul; 6 dead, dozens hurt
ISTANBUL (AP) – A bomb rocked a bustling pedestrian avenue in the heart of Istanbul on Sunday, killing six people, wounding several dozen and leaving panicked people to flee the fiery blast or huddle in cafes and shops.
Emergency vehicles rushed to the scene on Istiklal Avenue, a popular thoroughfare lined with shops and restaurants that leads to the iconic Taksim Square.
In one video posted online, a loud bang could be heard and a flash seen as pedestrians turned and ran away.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the blast a “treacherous attack” and said its perpetrators would be punished.
He did not say who was behind the attack but said it had the “smell of terror” without offering details and also adding that was not certain yet.
Sunday´s explosion was a shocking reminder of the anxiety and safety concerns that stalked the Turkish population during years when such attacks were common. The country was hit by a string of deadly bombings between 2015 and 2017, some by the Islamic State group, others by Kurdish militants who seek increased autonomy or independence.
In recent years, Erdogan has led a broad crackdown on the militants as well as on Kurdish lawmakers and activists.
Amid skyrocketing inflation and other economic troubles, Erdogan´s anti-terrorism campaign is a key rallying point for him ahead of presidential and parliamentary elections next year.

Shorter voting window could cut turnout in Georgia runoff
ATLANTA (AP) – Georgia Democrat Raphael Warnock’s first runoff in 2021 was a titanic nine-week clash to control the Senate that included three weeks of early in-person voting and lots of mail ballots.
Warnock’s victory against Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler – and Democrat Jon Ossoff’s tilt against Republican David Perdue – ended in two Democratic victories that gave the party control of a 50-50 Senate, thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris’ ability to break ties.
But the Dec.
If you loved this posting and you would like to acquire additional info concerning Lawyer Turkey kindly take a look at our web site. 6 runoff won’t be for Senate control this time with Democrats retaining seats in Arizona and Nevada earlier this month. Successful reelection bids by Sens. Mark Kelly and Catherine Cortez Masto were what Democrats needed to keep the slimmest of margins in the chamber.
Georgia requires a runoff if a candidate doesn´t win a majority in the party primary or in the general election. Neither Warnock nor Republican Herschel Walker got to 50%.
Under Georgia’s 2021 election law, there will be only four weeks before the runoff – with Thanksgiving in the middle.
Many Georgians will be offered only five weekdays of early in-person voting beginning Nov. 28. And June’s primary runoffs showed time for mail ballots to be received and returned can be very tight.

Pelosi holds open option of another term as House Dem leader
WASHINGTON (AP) – With control of the House still hanging in the balance, Speaker Nancy Pelosi stayed mum Sunday on her future plans but said congressional colleagues are urging her to seek another term as Democratic leader following a strong showing in the midterm elections.
Appearing in Sunday news shows, Pelosi said Democrats are “still alive” in their fight to win the chamber and that she will make a decision on whether to run for House leadership in the next couple weeks.
“People are campaigning and that´s a beautiful thing. And I´m not asking anyone for anything,” she said, referring to House Democratic leadership elections set for Nov.
30. “My members are asking me to consider doing that. But, again, let´s just get through the (midterm) election.”
“A great deal is at stake, because we will be in a presidential election,” Pelosi said.
Over the weekend, Democrats clinched control of the Senate following Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto’s victory in Nevada.
But in the House, a majority remains unsettled with neither party having yet reached the 218 seats needed to control the 435-member chamber. As of Sunday, Republicans had 212 seats compared to 204 for the Democrats, with 19 races still to be called by The Associated Press.

Investigation underway over midair crash at Dallas air show
DALLAS (AP) – A national transportation official probing the cause of a midair crash of two historic military planes during an air show that left six people dead said Sunday that one of the key questions for investigators is why the aircraft were seemingly sharing the same space just before impact.
A World War II-era bomber and a fighter plane collided and crashed to the ground in a ball of flames on Saturday, leaving crumpled wreckage in a grassy area inside the Dallas Executive Airport perimeter, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the city´s downtown. Several videos posted on social media showed the fighter plane flying into the bomber.
“One of the things we would probably most likely be trying to determine is why those aircraft were co-altitude in the same air space at the same time,” Michael Graham, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, said at a news conference.
The crash came three years after the crash of a bomber in Connecticut that killed seven, and amid ongoing concern about the safety of air shows involving older warplanes.
The company that owned the planes flying in the Wings Over Dallas show has had other crashes in its more than 60-year history.
The crash claimed six lives, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins tweeted Sunday, citing the county medical examiner.
Authorities are continuing work to identify the victims, he said. Dallas Fire-Rescue said there were no reports of injuries on the ground.

EXPLAINER: What’s happening at bankrupt crypto exchange FTX?
The imploding cryptocurrency trading firm FTX is now short billions of dollars after experiencing the crypto equivalent of a bank run.
The exchange, formerly one of the world’s largest, sought bankruptcy protection last week, and its CEO and founder resigned.
Hours later, the trading firm said there had been “unauthorized access” and that funds had disappeared. Analysts say hundreds of millions of dollars may have vanished.
The unraveling of the once-giant exchange is sending shockwaves through the industry.
Here’s a look at the company’s collapse so far:
WHY DID FTX GO BANKRUPT?
Customers fled the exchange over fears about whether FTX had sufficient capital, and it agreed to sell itself to rival crypto exchange Binance.
But the deal fell through while Binance´s due diligence on FTX´s balance sheet was still pending.

Massive turnout in defense of Mexico’s electoral authority
MEXICO CITY (AP) – Tens of thousands of people packed the Mexican capital´s main boulevard Sunday to protest President Andrés Manuel López Obrador´s proposal to overhaul the country´s electoral authority in the largest demonstration against one of the president´s efforts during his nearly four years in office.
The massive turnout was a strong rebuke of the president´s assertion that criticism comes only from a relatively small, elite opposition.
Opposition parties and civil society organizations had called on Mexicans to demonstrate in the capital and other cities against proposed electoral reforms that would remake the National Electoral Institute, one of the country´s most prized and trusted institutions.
López Obrador sees the institute as beholden to the elite, but critics say his reforms would threaten its independence and make it more political.
The initiative includes eliminating state-level electoral offices, cutting public financing of political parties and allowing the public to elect members of the electoral authority rather than the lower chamber of Congress.
It would also reduce the number of legislators in the lower chamber of Congress from 500 to 300 and senators from 128 to 96 by eliminating at-large lawmakers.
Those are not directly elected by voters, but appear on party lists and get seats based on their party´s proportion of the vote.

Musk’s latest Twitter cuts: Outsourced content moderators
Twitter´s new owner Elon Musk is further gutting the teams that battle misinformation on the social media platform as outsourced moderators learned over the weekend they were out of a job.
Twitter and other big social media firms have relied heavily on contractors to track hate and enforce rules against harmful content.
But many of those content watchdogs have now headed out the door, first when Twitter fired much of its full-time workforce by email on Nov.
4 and now as it moves to eliminate an untold number of contract jobs.
Melissa Ingle, who worked at Twitter as a contractor for more than a year, was one of a number of contractors who said they were terminated Saturday. She said she´s concerned that there´s going to be an increase in abuse on Twitter with the number of workers leaving.
“I love the platform and I really enjoyed working at the company and trying to make it better. And I´m just really fearful of what´s going to slip through the cracks,” she said Sunday.

‘Here comes the bride’: White House to host its 19th wedding
WASHINGTON (AP) – “Here Comes the Bride” will be heard at the White House very soon. Again.
Naomi Biden, the granddaughter of President Joe Biden, and Peter Neal are getting married on the South Lawn on Saturday in what will be the 19th wedding in White House history.
It will be the first wedding with a president’s granddaughter as the bride, and Lawyer Turkey the first one in that location, according to the White House Historical Association.
A mutual friend set up Naomi Biden, 28, and Neal, 25, Lawyer Turkey about four years ago in New York City and the White House said they have been together ever since.
Naomi Biden is a Lawyer Turkey; her father is Hunter Biden. Neal recently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania law school. The couple lives in Washington.
Nine of the 18 documented White House weddings were for a president´s daughter – most recently Richard Nixon´s daughter, Tricia, in 1971, and Lyndon B.

Sam Bankman-Fried’s downfall sends shockwaves through crypto
NEW YORK (AP) – Sam Bankman-Fried received numerous plaudits as he rapidly achieved superstar status as the head of cryptocurrency exchange FTX: the savior Lawyer Turkey of crypto, the newest force in Democratic politics and potentially the world´s first trillionaire.
Now the comments about the 30-year-old Bankman-Fried aren´t so kind after FTX filed for bankruptcy protection Friday, leaving his investors and customers feeling duped and many others in the crypto world fearing the repercussions.
Bankman-Fried himself could face civil or criminal charges.
“Sam what have you done?,” tweeted Sean Ryan Evans, host of the cryptocurrency podcast Bankless, after the bankruptcy filing.
Under Bankman-Fried, FTX quickly grew to be the third-largest exchange by volume.
The stunning collapse of this nascent empire has sent tsunami-like waves through the cryptocurrency industry, which has seen a fair share of volatility and turmoil this year, including a sharp decline in price for bitcoin and other digital assets. For some, the events are reminiscent of the domino-like failures of Wall Street firms during the 2008 financial crisis, particularly now that supposedly healthy firms like FTX are failing.
One venture capital fund wrote down investments in FTX worth over $200 million. The cryptocurrency lender BlockFi paused client withdrawals Friday after FTX sought bankruptcy protection. The Singapore-based exchange Crypto.com saw withdrawals increase this weekend for internal reasons but some of the action could be attributed to raw nerves from FTX.

More than 140 British holidaymakers have launched legal action after being struck down with severe illness at a luxury five-star resort in Turkey.
Dozens of families claim they contracted a sickness bug which ruined their holidays while staying at the Mukarnas Resort and Spa, in Antalya – a resort city on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.
Tourists reported being served lukewarm buffet food which was surrounded by flies, ‘disgusting’ toilets, a dirty pool and other unsanitary conditions throughout the hotel.
Now more than 140 people have instructed lawyers to investigate after suffering severe gastric illnesses during what should have been a dream holiday.
Among those affected were Julie O’Sullivan, 45, her partner Gary Hunt, 46, and her two children Harry, 16, and 15-year-old Hannah.
They travelled to the resort on May 29 through tour operator Jet2holidays – but within the first few days of their week-long trip, the family fell ill.
Ms O’Sullivan and Mr Hunt, who are both delivery drivers, and the two children all began suffering from stomach ache, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Julie O’Sullivan, 45, and her partner Gary Hunt, 46, (pictured) are among 140 families who have launched group legal action after being struck down by a sickness bug while staying at the Mukarnas Resort and Spa, in Antalya, Turkey
Ms O’Sullivan, of Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, said: ‘We’d been looking forward to going away for such a long time, but just two days in, Harry and I fell ill.
‘It came on all of a sudden and for the first 24 hours, the vomiting and diarrhoea was constant.
Then Gary and Hannah got it.
‘It was awful, as we spent most of our holiday in our room, unable to enjoy any day trips.
‘The whole holiday was a complete disaster and it’s still upsetting to think about it now.
‘When I think back, there were flies in the restaurant area and a lot of the food at the buffet was left uncovered, which allowed flies to get to the food.
‘I also noticed that when children were being sick outside, it was often left there for hours, or just swept into the drain or pool, meaning that guests were sometimes accidentally standing in it.
‘The hand sanitiser in the machine on entry to the restaurant was often also empty.
‘The toilets were also left in a disgusting state, and I complained about this several times, but I never saw them cleaned during the day even though people were being sick and having diarrhoea.
Tourists reported being served luke-warm buffet food which was surrounded by flies, ‘disgusting’ toilets, a dirty pool and other unsanitary conditions throughout the Mukarnas Resort and Spa (pictured)
‘We feel this is totally unacceptable for a five-star resort.’
Hannah, who is still at school, fortunately began to feel better by the time the family arrived back in the UK on June 6, but the others continued to suffer, with Ms O’Sullivan contacting their GP on behalf of the family.
Upon returning to the UK, Harry, who was in his final year at senior school, had his GCSE exams, which were ‘extremely difficult’ to sit due to his ongoing gastric symptoms.
Ms O’Sullivan and Lawyer Turkey Harry continue to suffer with ongoing issues, several months after their holiday.
They are undergoing various tests with their GP and have been prescribed medication to help ease their symptoms.
Julie added: ‘We can’t turn back the clock and change what we went through, but we want some answers and to know that something’s being done to help stop it happening again in the future. If you treasured this article so you would like to receive more info about Lawyer Turkey please visit the web-site. ‘
Jennifer Hodgson, an international serious injury Lawyer Turkey at Irwin Mitchell representing those affected, including Ms O’Sullivan and her family, said: ‘Julie, Gary and their family are among a large number of holidaymakers who stayed at this resort and Lawyer Turkey who were struck down by illness.
Law firm Irwin Mitchell are representing more than 140 people fell ill while staying at the Mukarnas Resort and Spa (pictured) this summer
‘All cases of holiday illness are concerning; however, it’s particularly worrying that such large numbers of people have reported falling ill, the majority of whom have reported similar symptoms.
‘Gastric symptoms can lead to long-term health problems and their impact should never be downplayed
‘We now represent more than 140 people who stayed at the Mukarnas Resort and Spa this summer and understandably have many questions about how they fell ill.
‘We’re now investigating their concerns and are determined to obtain the answers they deserve.
‘If any issues are identified, we urge that lessons are learned to help prevent other holidaymakers falling ill in the future.’
Other families who also fell ill at the same resort include couple Lauren Scott, Lawyer Turkey 27, and James Beard, 42, of Wigan, who reported seeing poo in the swimming pool.
The couple visited the resort with their daughters Maddison, 10, Georgia, eight, and six-year-old Olivia on July 9 and were all struck down by illness.
Lauren Scott, 27, and James Beard, 42, of Wigan, and their three daughters (pictured) were all struck with illness when they stayed at the resort in July
After being told they would have to pay nearly a thousand pounds for tests, the family returned home to the UK on July 24.
The couple continue to suffer gastric issues after their return, with Ms Scott also suffering from night sweats.
Mr Beard said: ‘We were all really excited about going to Turkey.
It was our first holiday away as a family and we’d been counting down the days.
‘Sadly, the resort was a huge let down. We were shocked at the standards and the number of holidaymakers who were falling ill.
‘The food served was never particularly hot and was served lukewarm.
The pool was also dirty and we didn’t see it being cleaned throughout our stay.
‘On one occasion there was poo in the hotel pool, and I was shocked when the lifeguards tried to remove it with their hands and didn’t close the pool or try to clean it.’
Another complainant was Mark Clifton, 38, an electrician from Yeovil, Somerset.
He and his partner visited the same resort between July 15 and July 25 with her two children.
Just three days into their trip Mark was unable to get out of bed.
Another complainant was Mark Clifton (pictured), 38, from Yeovil, Somerset who said he started suffering from stomach cramps, diarrhoea, sweats and a fever just three days into his trip
After suffering from stomach cramps, diarrhoea, sweats and a fever he went to see the hotel doctor – who was unavailable.
He continued suffering from stomach cramps after he returned home.
Mr Clifton said in August: ‘I was really shocked by the number of people I heard were ill at the resort.
Some staff tried to say it was heatstroke, but I think it was more than that.
‘I remember thinking the food at the hotel was lukewarm, and I didn’t once see the pool being cleaned or tested while I was there.
‘My partner and her children also fell ill, but their symptoms fortunately weren’t as bad as mine.
More than two weeks on I’m still not 100 per cent and I’m not sure how long this will go on for.
‘While I can’t turn back the clock, I just want to know why this happened.’
Mukarnas Resort and Spa has been contacted by MailOnline for comment.

Russia called on Ukrainian forces in Mariupol to lay down their arms, saying a ‘terrible humanitarian catastrophe’ was unfolding as it said defenders who did so were guaranteed safe passage out of the city and humanitarian corridors would be opened from it at 10am Moscow time (7am GMT) on Monday.
Fighting continued inside the besieged city today, regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said, without elaborating.
Russia and Ukraine have made agreements throughout the war on humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians, but have accused each other of frequent violations of those.
This comes as today Boris Johnson asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky what his military requires in Ukraine’s battle against Russia’s invasion as both leaders ‘agreed to step up their direct communication’, No 10 has said.
The Prime Minister ’set out his intention to advance Ukraine’s interests at this week’s Nato and G7 meetings and in upcoming bilateral engagement with key allies,’ according to a Downing Street spokeswoman.
Mr Johnson ‘asked for the president’s latest assessment of Ukraine’s military requirements in the face of Russian aggression’ and ‘outlined the UK’s ongoing commitment to work alongside international partners to co-ordinate support to strengthen Ukraine’s self-defence’.

She added: ‘The leaders also discussed the ongoing negotiations and the Prime Minister reaffirmed his staunch support for Ukraine’s position.
‘Both leaders stressed the continued importance of sanctions in exerting pressure on (Russian President Vladimir Putin), and they condemned the abhorrent attacks on innocent civilians, following the appalling bombings in Mariupol.
‘The Prime Minister expressed his admiration for the bravery of Ukraine and was clear that the UK was committed to stepping up military, economic and diplomatic support in order to help bring an end to this terrible conflict.’

Photos of damaged buildings have today been captured after three were injured in air strike on western Ukraine, emergency services said
Three have today been injured in air strike on western Ukraine, emergency services said, as thirteen buildings were damaged in the attack, which targeted the Korostensky district north of the region’s main city Zhytomyr.
‘Three people were injured,’ a Facebook post from Ukraine’s emergency services added, posting images of burning buildings and scattered charred debris.
Also on Sunday, Russia’s defence ministry said its ‘high-precision missiles’ hit a training centre of Ukrainian special forces in Zhytomyr region, around 150 kilometres (90 miles) west of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.
‘More than 100 (Ukrainian) servicemen of the special forces and foreign mercenaries were destroyed,’ in the attack, the ministry said.
Terrifying footage has emerged apparently showing Russia firing deadly thermobaric TOS-1A rockets, which can allegedly melt human organs.
Moscow defence sources claimed: ‘The TOS-1A Solntsepek was used against Ukrainian nationalists by the people’s militia of the Donetsk People’s Republic with the support of the Russian army during a special operation in Ukraine.’
Earlier also said Russia’s siege of the port city was ‘a terror that will be remembered for centuries to come’.
His comments came after local authorities said Russian troops had forcefully deported several thousand people from the besieged city last week, after Russia had spoken of ‘refugees’ arriving from the strategic port.
‘Over the past week, several thousand Mariupol residents were deported onto the Russian territory,’ the city council said in a statement on its Telegram channel late on Saturday.
‘The occupiers illegally took people from the Livoberezhniy district and from the shelter in the sports club building, where more than a thousand people (mostly women and children) were hiding from the constant bombing.’
Zelensky said the siege of Mariupol would ‘go down in history of responsibility for war crimes’.
‘To do this to a peaceful city…
is a terror that will be remembered for centuries to come.’
Meanwhile, authorities in Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv say at least five civilians, including a nine-year-old boy, have been killed in the latest Russian shelling.
This comes as Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba has on Twitter posted about protests in Energodar, a city in the country’s north-west oblast, following claims that Russian forces have abducted its deputy mayor.
Mr Kuleba’s tweet said: ‘Brave Ukrainians in Energodar hold a peaceful protest demanding to release deputy mayor Ivan Samoidyuk who was abducted by Russian invaders.
Russians thought they could impose their authoritarian rules in democratic Ukraine. Instead, they need to go home.’
Earlier this month President Zelensky demanded the release of Melitopol’s mayor after his alleged kidnap by Russian troops, which sparked local protests.
The Ukrainian leader said the capture was an ‘attempt to bring the city to its knees’ and demanded the immediate release of Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of the besieged city.
Mr Fedorov is understood to have been released according to Ukrainian authorities, reports.
Zelensky today also urged Israel to ‘make its choice’ and abandon its effort to maintain neutrality towards the invasion.
The Ukrainian leader, who is Jewish, made the appeal during an address to Israeli lawmakers, the latest in a series of speeches by videoconference to foreign legislatures.
In remarks that at several points compared Russian aggression to the Holocaust, Zelensky said that ‘Ukraine made the choice to save Jews 80 years ago.’
‘Now it’s time for Israel to make its choice.’
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has walked a careful diplomatic line since Russia launched its invasion on February 24.
Stressing Israel’s strong ties to Moscow and Kyiv, Bennett has sought to preserve delicate security cooperation with Russia, which has troops in Syria, across Israel’s northern border.
He has held regular phone calls with Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, including a three-hour meeting with the Russian President at the Kremlin on March 5.
While Ukrainian officials have voiced appreciation for Bennett’s mediation efforts, Zelensky today implied that this too had proven to be a misstep.
‘We can mediate between states but not between good and evil,’ the Ukrainian leader said.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said that the West needs to have a ‘degree of scepticism’ about the prospect of a peace deal between Russia and Ukrainevas Kyiv looked to stand firm against giving up territory in a settlement.
Speaking today, the Chancellor said it is ‘encouraging’ that discussions are under way but the West has to be on its guard.
Mr Sunak told Sky News’ Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme: ‘You have to have some degree of scepticism about it given the track record of these things.
‘I think the most important thing is that any talk of a settlement must be on Ukraine’s terms.
‘And the best thing we can do is just maintain the significant pressure that we are bringing to bear on Putin, but also providing support to the Ukrainians in the meantime – that’s the best we can do and the Ukrainians will take the lead.’
An official in Mr Zelensky’s office told the Associated Press that the main subject discussed between the two sides last week was whether Russian troops would remain in separatist regions in eastern Ukraine after the war and where the borders would lie.
But a Ukraine politician said while her country is open to further meetings with Russia, it is not prepared to give up land to the aggressor.
Olha Stefanishyna, deputy prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration, told Sky News that re-drawing Ukraine’s borders is ‘absolutely not’ being considered.
‘Ukrainian territory is a territory which has been fixed (since) 1991,’ she said.
‘That is not an option for discussion.’
According to reports, Kyiv has insisted on the inclusion of one or more Western nuclear powers in the negotiations with the Kremlin and on legally binding security guarantees for Ukraine.
Asked whether the UK would act as a security guarantor to the Ukrainians as part of any peace deal, Mr Sunak – who confirmed his family will not be taking in a Ukrainian refugee – said it is ‘probably a bit too early to get into the details’ of what an agreement might look like.
Elsewhere, Boris Johnson has urged China to get off the fence and join in global condemnation of Russia’s invasion.
The Prime Minister, in comments made to the Sunday Times, said he believes some in Xi Jinping’s administration are having ’second thoughts’ about the neutral stance adopted by Beijing following Russia’s actions against its neighbour.
But today China’s ambassador to the US defended his country’s refusal to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking with CBS’s ‘Face the Nation’ Qin Gang said condemnation ‘doesn’t solve the problem’.
He said: ‘I would be surprised if Russia will back down by condemnation.’
Mr Gang added: ‘(China) will continue to promote peace talks and urge immediate fire.
‘And, you know, condemnation, you know, only, doesn’t help.
We need wisdom. We need courage and we need good diplomacy.’
Zelensky also said peace talks with Russia were needed although they were ‘not easy and pleasant’. He said he discussed the course of the talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday.
‘Ukraine has always sought a peaceful solution. Moreover, we are interested in peace now,’ he said.
Vladimir Putin has reportedly ‘finally agreed’ to meet in person with Zelensky for peace talks.
So far the negotiations have been between middle men on neutral ground but the war has continued into its fourth week.
The Russian tyrant will allegedly meet President Zelensky ‘at some point’, the reported.
The two leaders have let their diplomatic teams conduct peace talks on the neutral ground since shortly after the start of the conflict on February 24, but a BBC correspondent has confirmed the two will meet in person.
Putin has come to terms with fact he will have to lead the negotiations at some time in the future, the BBC’s Lysa Doucet said.
She said: ’The diplomats are talking, the negotiators are talking.
We understand President Putin has finally agreed that he will meet, at some point, President Zelensky who has been asking for a meeting since January.
‘He hasn’t said it in public, he says quite the opposite in public.’
She added: ‘The Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is very busy, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is very busy.

It seemed to shoot around a metre above the heads of soldiers on the ground, who had their rifles aimed at the tanks
The tanks had been painted with a white ‘Z’, which has quickly become a symbol for Russia in its war with Ukraine
‘They’ve said privately their understanding is that President Putin will meet President Zelensky when the time is right.
But the time is not right now.’
Meanwhile, Russia’s military isn’t even recovering the bodies of its soldiers in some places, Zelensky said.
‘In places where there were especially fierce battles, the bodies of Russian soldiers simply pile up along our line of defense.
And no one is collecting these bodies,’ he said. He described a battle near Chornobayivka in the south, where Ukrainian forces held their positions and six times beat back the Russians, who just kept ’sending their people to slaughter’.
Russian news agencies, citing the country’s defence ministry, have said buses carrying several hundred people – which Moscow calls refugees – have been arriving in Russia from Mariupol in recent days.

The Russian TASS news agency reported on Saturday that 13 busses were moving to Russia, carrying more than 350 people, about 50 of whom were to be sent by rail to the Yaroslavl region and the rest to temporary transition centres in Taganrog, a port city in Russia’s Rostov region.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said this month that Russia had prepared 200 busses to ‘evacuate’ citizens of Mariupol.
RIA Novosti agency, citing emergency services, reported last week that nearly 300,000 people, including some 60,000 children, have arrived in Russia from the Luhansk and Donbas regions, including from Mariupol, in recent weeks.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said this month that more than 2.6 million people in Ukraine have asked to be evacuated.
The city council in the Azov Sea port city said Sunday that 39,426 residents, almost ten per cent of the 430,000 who live there, have safely evacuated from Mariupol in their own vehicles.
It said the evacuees used more than 8,000 vehicles to leave via a humanitarian corridor via Berdyansk to Zaporizhzhia.
Air raid sirens sounded across major Ukrainian cities early on Sunday but there were no immediate reports of fresh attacks.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been trapped in Mariupol for more than two weeks, sheltering from heavy bombardment that has severed central supplies of electricity, heating, food and water supplies, and killed at least 2,300 people, some of whom had to be buried in mass graves, according to local authorities.

The governor of the northeastern Sumy region, Dmytro Zhyvytskyy, said Sunday that 71 infants have been safely evacuated via a humanitarian corridor.
Zhyvytskyy said on Facebook that the orphans will be taken to an unspecified foreign country.
He said most of them require constant medical attention. Like many other Ukrainian cities, Sumy has been besieged by Russian troops and faced repeated shelling.
Meanwhile, the Russian military says it has carried out a new series of strikes on Ukrainian military facilities with long-range hypersonic and cruise missiles.

Saved: A Ukrainian recruit was rescued after 30 hours from debris of the military school hit by Russian rockets, in Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine, on March 19
A Russian attack on a barracks for young Ukrainian recruits in the middle of the night that killed at least 50 young Ukrainian recruits was branded as ‘cowardly’.
Russian rockets struck the military school in Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine, on Friday, killing dozens of young Ukrainian ensigns at their brigade headquarters.
Ukrainian soldier Maxim, 22, who was at the barracks, said ’no fewer than 200 soldiers were sleeping in the barracks’ at the time of the strike.
‘At least 50 bodies have been recovered, but we do not know how many others are in the rubble,’ he said.
Vitaly Kim, the governor of Mykolaiv, said Russia ‘hit our sleeping soldiers with a rocket in a cowardly manner.’
Meanwhile Olga Malarchuk, a military official, said: ’We aren’t allowed to say anything because the rescue operation isn’t over and the families haven’t all been informed.
‘We are not yet able to announce a toll and I cannot tell you how many soldiers were present’.
Russia also said it had fired a second ’unstoppable’ hypersonic Kinzhal missile at a fuel depot in Kostyantynivka, in the southern region of Mykolaiv.
A MiG-31K jet fired the aeroballistic missile at the warehouse as it was flying over Crimea.
Major General Igor Konashenkov, from the Russian Defence Ministry, said the target was the main supply of fuel for Ukrainian armoured cars in the south of the country.
He claimed the missile had destroyed the depot.
It is the second time Russia says it has used the missile in Ukraine, after a weapons storage site was destroyed in Deliatyn, in the Carpathian Mountains in western Ukraine, on Friday.
NATO deem the weapon so powerful it has been nicknamed The Sizzler.

Russia has never before admitted using the high-precision weapon in combat.
Moscow claims the ‘Kinzhal’- or Dagger – is ‘unstoppable’ by current Western weapons.
The missile, which has a range of 2,000 kilometer (1,250 miles), is nuclear capable.
However, both hypersonic strikes so far have not been nuclear.
‘The Kinzhal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse containing missiles and aviation ammunition in the village of Deliatyn in the Ivano-Frankivsk region’, the Russian defence ministry said Saturday.
Russian Maj.
Gen. Igor Konashenkov also said that the Russian forces used the anti-ship missile system Bastion to strike Ukrainian military facilities near the Black Sea port of Odessa.
Aerial footage released by the Russian military claimed to show the missile strike.
Large, long buildings are shown in the footage in a snowy region, before one is obliterated by a huge explosion – sending flames, earth and debris high into the air. People can be seen on the ground fleeing as smoke pours from the site.
Ukrainian air force spokesman Yuri Ignat confirmed that a storage site had been targeted, but added that Kyiv had no information regarding the type of missile that was used.

‘The enemy targeted our depots’ but ‘we have no information of the type of missile,’ he said. ‘There has been damage, destruction and the detonation of munitions. They are using all the missiles in their arsenal against us.’
Russia reportedly first used the weapon during its military campaign in Syria in 2016 to support the Assad regime, although it was unclear if this was the same model.
Some of the most intense bombing came in 2016 during the battle for Aleppo, resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has termed the missile ‘an ideal weapon’ that flies at 10 times the speed of sound, which is 7672.69 miles per hour, and can overcome air-defence systems.

Deliatyn, a picturesque village in the foothills of the picturesque Carpathian mountains, is located outside the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. The region of Ivano-Frankivsk shares a 30-mile long border with NATO member Romania.
Konashenkov noted that the Kalibr cruise missiles launched by Russian warships from the Caspian Sea were also involved in the strike on the fuel depot in Kostiantynivka.
He said Kalibr missiles launched from the Black Sea were used to destroy an armor repair plant in Nizhyn in the Chernihiv region in northern Ukraine.
Konashenkov added that another strike by air-launched missiles hit a Ukrainian facility in Ovruch in the northern Zhytomyr region where foreign fighters and Ukrainian special forces were based.
The British defense ministry said the Ukrainian Air Force and air defense forces are ‘continuing to effectively defend Ukrainian airspace’.
‘Russia has failed to gain control of the air and is largely relying on stand-off weapons launched from the relative safety of Russian airspace to strike targets within Ukraine’, the ministry said on Twitter.
‘Gaining control of the air was one of Russia’s principal objectives for the opening days of the conflict and their continued failure to do so has significantly blunted their operational progress.’

A Ukrainian military official meanwhile confirmed to a Ukrainian newspaper that Russian forces carried out a missile strike Friday on a missile and ammunition warehouse in the Deliatyn settlement of the Ivano-Frankivsk region in western Ukraine.
But Ukraine’s Air Forces spokesman Yurii Ihnat told Ukrainskaya Pravda on Saturday that it has not been confirmed that the missile was indeed a hypersonic Kinzhal.
Russia also boasted in a chilling newly-released video how it is using adapted Israeli reconnaissance combat drone technology to kill in Ukraine.
The footage shows a Forpost-R destroying a battery of Ukrainian howitzers and military hardware.
Israel six years ago stopped supplying components for the drone – but Russia still has a force of around 100.
The Russian defence ministry said: ‘Unmanned aerial vehicles of the Aerospace Forces carried out missile strikes on a self-propelled artillery battery of 122mm howitzers and military hardware of the Ukrainian armed forces.
‘A battery of self-propelled artillery guns, armoured vehicles and vehicles were destroyed by airborne weapons.’
The import-substituted Forpost-R drone is a licensed version of the Israeli Searcher MkII.
The drone was supplied to Russia but was designed exclusively for reconnaissance.
It is an improved and indigenised model variant of the Forpost (Outpost), the Israeli Searcher Mk II UAV assembled by Yekaterinburg-based Ural Civil Aviation Plant.
From 2016, Israel stopped supplying components to Russia, apparently under pressure from the US, triggering the move by the Kremlin to adapt the drone.
The Forpost-R unmanned combat aerial vehicle was first seen a week ago deployed by Russia in the current conflict.
The video is believed to show the combat drone taking off from Gomel, in Belarus, and striking at targets in Ukraine.
Mariupol, a key connection to the Black Sea, has been a target since the start of the war on February 24, when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched what he calls a ’special military operation’ to demilitarise and ‘denazify’ Ukraine.
Ukraine and the West say Putin launched an unprovoked war of aggression.
As Russia has sought to seize most of Ukraine’s southern coast, Mariupol has assumed great importance, lying between the Russian-annexed peninsula of Crimea to the west and the Donetsk region to the east, which is partially controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
The U.N.
human rights office said at least 847 civilians had been killed and 1,399 wounded in Ukraine as of Friday. The Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office said 112 children have been killed.
Rescue workers on Sunday were still searching for survivors in a Mariupol theatre that local authorities say was flattened by Russian air strikes on Wednesday.
Russia denies hitting the theatre or targeting civilians.
Satellite images, released on Saturday, showed the collapsed remains of the building which was sheltering hundreds of children and their families before being levelled in a Russian airstrike.
More than 1,300 people, including women and babies, are still feared trapped in the bombed ruins of the theatre in the besieged city of Mariupol as rescue efforts are hampered by constant Russian shelling.
Their prospects of survival are growing bleaker by the day, with no supplies and Russian troops firing at rescuers trying to dig through the rubble.
Last night a local MP said those inside were forced to dig from within the wreckage because rescue attempts had been thwarted by ongoing airstrikes.
On Sunday the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine shared photographs of children’s drawings about the ongoing war.
This one includes a dead soldier and a Russian military truck with a ‘Z’ symbol on it that seems to be firing at the child, labelled ‘Me’, and their ‘Papa’ and ‘Mama’ as well as a pet, who are all inside a heart the colours of the Ukrainian flag

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who branded Russia’s attack as ‘outright terror’, last night vowed to continue the rescue mission.
‘Hundreds of Mariupol residents are still under the debris.
Despite the shelling, despite all the difficulties, we will continue the rescue work,’ he said.

Russian troops have now reached the city centre and civilians remain hiding in bunkers while fighters battle on the streets.
Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boichenko said: ‘Tanks and machine gun battles continue.
There’s no city centre left. There isn’t a small piece of land in the city that doesn’t have signs of war.’
The devastating losses across Ukraine have sparked a poignant protest in Lviv, where 109 empty prams were arranged in solemn rows to mark the number of children killed since Russia invaded.
Local authorities said more than 130 survivors have emerged from the rubble of the Mariupol theatre which was being used as the ravaged port city’s biggest civilian bomb shelter.
But they said that those saved represented just one tenth of the civilians still trapped within the refuge which miraculously withstood the blast.
Ukraine’s human rights commissioner Lyudmyla Denisova said: ‘According to our data there are still more than 1,300 people there who are in these basements, in that bomb shelter.
We pray that they will be alive but so far there is no information about them.’

Former governor MP Serhiy Taruta said he fears many survivors will die because the city’s emergency services have been destroyed by Russian troops.
‘Services that are supposed to help are demolished, rescue and utility services are physically destroyed.
This means that all the survivors of the bombing will either die under the ruins of the theatre, or have already died,’ he wrote on Facebook.
He said those trapped had been left to dig their way out of the collapsed three-storey building.
‘People are doing everything themselves.
My friends went to help but due to constant shelling it was not safe.’
However Mariupol MP Dmytro Gurin insisted that while the rescue mission had been hampered by constant Russian attacks, efforts were still under way.
One woman said the strike had taken place while those sheltering beneath the theatre were cooking and only around 100 had time to flee.
Nick Osychenko, the CEO of a Mariupol TV station, said as he fled the city with six members of his family, aged between 4 and 61, he saw dead bodies on nearly every block.
‘We were careful and didn’t want the children to see the bodies, so we tried to shield their eyes,’ he said.
‘We were nervous the whole journey. It was frightening, just frightening.’
Russia has denied responsibility for the devastating strike which was branded a ‘war crime’ and sparked global outrage.
After an agonising first night of uncertainty following the bombing, Ukrainian officials revealed on Thursday that they were hopeful that the majority within had survived.
Rescuers said that while the entrance to the basement had caved in, the relatively modern shelter had remained intact.
But Miss Denisova said that while some had survived, the situation remained unclear.
She said there was ‘currently no information about the dead or wounded under the rubble’ and called the attack ‘an act of genocide and a terrible crime against humanity’.
Ukraine’s Minister of Defence Oleksii Reznikov branded the Russian pilot behind the bombing a ‘monster’.
But the Kremlin’s UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzya yesterday denied that Russia had targeted the shelter.

Kyiv and Moscow reported some progress in talks last week toward a political formula that would guarantee Ukraine’s security, while keeping it outside NATO, though each sides accused the other of dragging things out.
Zelensky has said Ukraine could accept international security guarantees that stopped short of its longstanding aim to join NATO.
That prospect has been one of Russia’s primary stated concerns.
The Ukrainian president, who makes frequent impassioned appeals to foreign audiences for help, told an anti-war protest in Bern on Saturday that Swiss banks were where the ‘money of the people who unleashed this war’ lay and their accounts should be frozen.
Ukrainian cities ‘are being destroyed on the orders of people who live in European, in beautiful Swiss towns, who enjoy property in your cities.
It would really be good to strip them of this privilege’, he said in an audio address.
Neutral Switzerland, which is not a member of the European Union, has fully adopted EU sanctions against Russian individuals and entities, including orders to freeze their wealth in Swiss banks.
The EU measures are part of a wider sanctions effort by Western nations aimed at squeezing Russia’s economy and starving its war machine.

Russia’s defence ministry said on Friday that its troops have now entered the city and are fighting in the centre, amid fears that it could soon fall into Putin’s hands after three weeks of shelling weakened the defences.
If the city does fall, it will be the largest captured so-far – albeit at the cost of near-totally destroying it.
Svitlana Zlenko, who said she left the city with her son on Tuesday this week, described how she spent days sheltering in a school building – melting snow to cook pasta to eat while living in constant terror of Russian bombs which flew overhead ‘every day and every night’.
She described how a bomb hit the school last week, wounding a woman in the hip with a piece of shrapnel.
‘She was lying on the first floor of the high school all night and prayed for poison so that she would not feel pain,’ Svitlana said. ‘[She] was taken by the Red Cross within a day, I pray to God she is well.’
She added: ‘There is no food, no medicine, if there is no snow with such urban fights, people will not be able to go out to get water, people have no water left.
Pharmacies, grocery stores – everything is robbed or burned.
‘The dead are not taken out. Police recommend to the relatives of those who died of a natural death, to open the windows and lay the bodies on the balcony. I know you think you understand, but you will never understand unless you were there.
I pray that this will not happen again in any of the cities of Ukraine, or Lawyer Turkey of the world.’
Despite the pleas, shelling was well underway in other Ukrainian cities on Friday – with Lviv, in the west of the country, the capital Kyiv, and Kharkiv, in the east, coming under fire.
The war launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin ground into its fourth week as his troops have failed to take Kyiv – a major objective in their hopes of forcing a settlement or dictating the country’s future political alignments.

’s son-in-law Jared Kushner defends his relationship with the notorious crown prince of Saudi of Arabia in a forthcoming memoir, saying that Mohammed Bin Salman was a reforming power in the kingdom and that he believed his denials of any personal involvement in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.
Kushner’s ties to MBS have been under intense scrutiny this year.
Six months after leaving the , his new private equity firm secured a $2 billion investment from a fund led by the 36-year-old Saudi crown prince, raising questions about whether Kushner was being rewarded for acting as a go-between.
In ‘Breaking History: A White House Memoir,’ which will be published on August 23, Kushner defends working with MBS, even after dissident journalist Khashoggi was killed in 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
‘While this situation was terrible, I couldn’t ignore the fact that the reforms that MBS was implementing were having a positive impact on millions of people in the kingdom—especially women,’ he writes, according to excerpts published by the
‘All of these reforms were major priorities for the United States, as they led to further progress in combating extremism and advancing economic opportunity and stability throughout the war-torn region.
‘The kingdom was poised to build on this historic progress, and I believed it would.’
In a forthcoming memoir Jared Kushner defends his close relationship with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, even though U.S. intelligence agencies concluded he was responsible for the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi
MBS, as he is known, has worked ruthlessly to silence opponents and consolidate power
Khashoggi criticized MBS’s approach to power in commentaries published in the Washington Post and elsewhere. He was murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018 after MBS personally ordered that he be killed or captured, according to US intelligence agencies
Breaking History is published by Broadside Books on August 23
Kushner also said he accepted the Saudi leader’s claim that he was not personally involved.
That puts him at odds with U.S. intelligence agencies, which concluded that MBS had directly approved an operation to kill or capture Khashoggi.
Trump shrugged off the episode as an anomaly that should not get in the way of relations between Washington and Riyadh.
And although President Joe Biden has talked of building a foreign policy based on values and of making Saudi Arabia a pariah for its actions, earlier this month he met with MBS as part of an effort to improve relations and bring down oil prices.
Throughout Trump’s time in office, Kushner’s close relationship with MBS was a source of friction between officials. He was widely reported to use WhatsApp to communicate with the crown prince, keeping other staff and Cabinet secretaries in the dark.
In 2017 he had an angry showdown with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who accused him of undercutting his authority.
President Joe Biden exchanges an awkward fist bump with MBS during his trip to Jeddah earlier this month. Biden had promised to make Saudi Arabia a pariah
Tillerson opposed Kushner’s effort to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and accused him of backing Saudi Arabia’s push to isolate Qatar, home to a vital U.S. airbase.
‘You are lighting a match in a dry forest, and the whole Middle East is on fire,’ Tillerson said, according to the book.
‘You might as well go before the Senate for confirmation because you are going to cause a war, and I am not going to be the one to be blamed for it.’
In Kushner’s account, he then called MBS so that he could reassure Tillerson that he was not being cut out of talks.
But Tillerson stormed out of the room, shouting: ‘I can’t operate like this!’
Meet MBS, the Saudi crown prince who owns a $500m yacht and French chateau, plays ‘Call of Duty,’ reopened theaters, and according to U.S. intelligence ordered the killing of Jamal Khashoggi
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has shaken up the conservative kingdom with head-spinning reforms while quashing any threats to his status since becoming de facto ruler of the world’s biggest oil producer five years ago.
The hard-charging heir drew international revulsion after Saudi agents killed and dismembered journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, but US President Joe Biden’s visit to the kingdom this month has helped restore his position on the international stage, forcing world leaders to deal with him whether they want to or not.
A towering figure with a full-face beard, deep growling voice and seemingly boundless energy, Prince Mohammed is known for his super-sized ambitions, from building the futuristic megacity known as NEOM to waging the seven-year-old war in neighbouring Yemen.
The brash 36-year-old, known widely as ‘MBS’ and said to have a fondness for fast food and the ‘Call of Duty’ video games, is also fabulously rich, owning a $500 million yacht, a French chateau and, according to officially denied reports, a $450 million Leonardo da Vinci painting.
Then President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman speak at the G20 Osaka Summit on June 28, 2019
Unlike other Saudi princes with their British accents, sharp suits and Oxford degrees, MBS embraces the country’s Bedouin roots, usually donning a traditional robe and sandals, treating friends and relatives to lavish roast lamb meals in luxury desert camps.
Having plotted his path to power from relative obscurity, Prince Mohammed has overseen the biggest transformation in Saudi Arabia’s modern history, the world’s top crude oil exporter and host of Islam’s two holiest sites, Mecca and Medina.
Under his rule, the kingdom’s religious police have been de-fanged, cinemas have reopened, foreign tourists have been welcomed, and Saudi Arabia has staged a film festival, operas, Formula One Grand Prix, heavyweight boxing, professional wrestling and a huge rave festival.
Yet he has also jailed critics and, in a sweeping purge of the nation’s elite, detained and threatened some 200 princes and businessmen in Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton hotel in a 2017 anti-corruption crackdown that tightened his grip on power.

His image was most severely tarnished by the brutal murder of Khashoggi inside the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate in October 2018, which prompted condemnation of the crown prince, despite Riyadh’s insistence that rogue agents carried out the killing.
‘MBS is a hugely divisive character, praised by supporters as a long-awaited game-changer in a region aching for it and dismissed by foes as a brutal dictator in the making,’ wrote Ben Hubbard in ‘MBS: The Rise to Power of Mohammed bin Salman’.
‘He is determined to give Saudis a shining, prosperous future and exercises an unflinching willingness to crush his foes. Combined in different doses, those attributes will likely guide his actions far into the future.’

Prince Mohammed, son of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, was born on August 31, 1985. He is one of the hundreds of grandchildren of the country’s founder, King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, Lawyer Turkey and grew up in a Riyadh palace with his mother, Fahda, one of his father’s four wives, and his five brothers.
‘As the sixth son of the 25th son of the founding king, there was little reason to expect that he would rise to prominence,’ wrote Hubbard. ‘And for Lawyer Turkey most of his life, few people did.’
He earned a law degree from Riyadh’s King Saud University but never studied abroad, and soon worked as a special adviser to his father, the then-Riyadh governor.
Saudi Arabia has opened up to cultural and sports events, including the Dakar Rally 2021
When King Salman assumed the throne in early 2015, he named Prince Mohammed as defence minister. Soon the young man also coordinated economic policy, oversaw the state oil company Saudi Aramco and supervised the kingdom’s military intervention in Yemen.
Within a year, he held so many portfolios that diplomats called him ‘Mr Everything’.
The prince – now a father of three boys and two girls, who unlike other Saudi royals has only one wife – reportedly worked 16-hour days and drew inspiration from Winston Churchill and Sun Tzu’s ‘The Art of War’.
His rise was rapid, replacing his elder cousin Prince Mohammed bin Nayef to become heir to the throne in 2017. Three years later Prince Nayef, along with a brother of King Salman, was reportedly detained.
Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has overseen the most fundamental transformation in the kindom’s modern history
Prince Mohammed has pledged to forge a ‘moderate’ Saudi Arabia and courts international investors for his wide-ranging Vision 2030 plan to diversify the oil-reliant economy.
‘We want to live a normal life,’ he once told business leaders in Riyadh. ‘All we are doing is going back to what we were — a moderate Islam that is open to all religions and open to the world.
‘Seventy percent of the Saudi population is under 30 and, honestly, we will not spend the next 30 years of our lives dealing with extremist ideas. We will destroy them today.’
- ‘Fire hose of ideas’ -
As he rose to prominence, he toured the United States and charmed leaders in the White House and Lawyer Turkey on Wall Street, in Silicon Valley and Hollywood.
People attend the Soundstorm music festival, organized by MDLBEAST, in Banban on the outskirts of the Saudi capital Riyadh on December 16, 2021
New York Times writer Thomas Friedman recounted how in an interview that lasted late into the night, the prince ‘wore me out with a fire hose of new ideas for transforming his country’.
Perhaps his most hyper-ambitious initiative is the $500 billion NEOM project on the Red Sea coast, to be powered by solar energy and staffed by robots, which the prince describes as a ‘civilisational leap for humanity’.
Reflecting the hopes of the country’s youthful population, Prince Mohammed has eased restrictions on women’s rights, allowing them to drive, attend sports events and concerts alongside men, and obtain passports without the approval of a male guardian.
Along with the reforms, though, came a crackdown on dissidents, including intellectuals and women’s rights activists, Lawyer Turkey part of an apparent strategy to stamp out any trace of opposition before a formal transfer of power from King Salman.
Internationally, he has pursued a more assertive foreign policy, plunging the kingdom into a quagmire of regional rivalries: the Yemen war, hostility toward Shiite power Iran, a three-year blockade of Qatar until 2021, and the reported detention of Lebanon’s prime minister for several tense days.
Prince Mohammed, who once publicly berated US president Barack Obama for criticising Saudi Arabia’s rights record, forged a strong bond with Donald Trump and especially his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, which served him well during the fallout over Khashoggi’s death.
A handout picture provided by the Saudi Royal Palace shows Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman receiving French President Emmanuel Macron in Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coastal city of Jeddah on December 4, 2021
The prince initially faced renewed scrutiny of his human rights record from Biden, who released an intelligence report stating MBS had ‘approved an operatio’ to capture or kill Khashoggi.
Biden did not, however, take action against the crown prince and this month the pair met on Saudi soil, despite an earlier pledge to make the country a ‘pariah’.
This shift is perhaps an acknowledgement that Prince Mohammed, still in his 30s, could rule Saudi Arabia for half a century or more.
